2019-2021 Mission Grant 20

Music Outreach, Classes, and Resources on the Border

Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care, El Paso, Texas

$98,400

nullMariachi San Pablo leads children in the dance of "El Pato" (the duck) at an outreach concert on tour in Florida.  Mariachi music speaks to the heart of many Hispanics and brings joy to those who hear it regardless of their cultural heritage.  Mariachi arrangements of beloved Lutheran hymns and contemporary praise songs have touched the hearts of thousands who have heard them and provide a bridge to speak about faith in Christ when paired with familiar popular mariachi songs in outreach concerts.
nullChildren sing, smile and rejoice as they join in praising at a weekly mission outreach program.  Grant funds would enable YLM to expand its classes for young children reaching families who already come each week to YLM's mission campus as a part of other ministry efforts.

The ministry of YLMHC impacts the lives of 400-500 students with educational programs, classroom space, and equipment. For the past 17 years YLMHC’s music ministry has proven successful in reaching out to the unchurched by witnessing to the mercy and grace of Christ.  The Adelante Ministries offers music classes and leadership training to youth and adults while it also provides service to the church and community. Through involvement in this music program, many students have come to faith in Christ. This grant will enable YLMHC to better equip their classroom and rehearsal space so they can serve and teach a larger range of students. It will also allow them to adapt existing space for music instruction, purchase recording equipment, create video tutorials for online instruction, fund a music intern position, and purchase musical instruments for students unable to afford their own.

WHEREAS, music reaches the heart and touches the soul of all and is a vital part of our praise and worship as Lutherans; and
WHEREAS, there is an ongoing need to train musicians for service in the church and community; and
WHEREAS, Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care has a longstanding history of excellence in outreach and music education on the border; and
WHEREAS, Ysleta Lutheran Mission Human Care is uniquely situated to meet this need but requires improved facilities and additional equipment to expand and enhance this important work; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the delegates gathered at the 2019 Lutheran Women’s Missionary League Convention in Mobile, Alabama, vote the sum of $98,400 to help fund Music: Outreach, Classes and Resources on the Border.

nullGrant funds will enable increased partnerships with other congregations seeking to provide outreach through music to their communities.  Here Mariachi San Pablo leads music for a Christmas Posada at Zion Lutheran Church in December, 2017.  Attendees enjoyed music in the church's sanctuary and then walked door to door around the neighborhood reenacting Mary and Joseph's search for lodging in Bethlehem with this beloved Mexican Christmas tradition.
nullViolin students of all ages practice learning some new songs and refine their tuning.  Current classroom space is tucked into YLM offices wherever space is available.  Renovations to outfit acoustically sound and dedicated classroom space funded by this mission grant would enable increased class size, secure storage of instruments and equipment, and a more professional atmosphere for these valuable classes.
nullDirector Miguel Muñoz works with a high school student to prepare for a Mariachi San Pablo performance.  Miguel came to know Christ as he became involved with music classes and Mariachi San Pablo and now serves as a dynamic leader teaching, performing, and serving in the local congregation.
nullMia and Jaden learn handbells, recorder, and how to read music in partnership with a local congregation.  Grant funds will enable YLM to teach more children these valuable musical skills which will be useful throughout their lives and equip them for service to their churches through music.
nullMariachi music and performance has been one of the biggest successes of YLM's music classes to date.  When YLM began offering classes in 2001 the most attended classes were those focused on the mariachi instruments of guitar, violin, guitarron, vihuela and trumpet.  Mariachi San Pablo has included members ages 6-70 from all walks of life.  Here Mariachi San Pablo stands in front of San Pablo Lutheran Church on YLM's 4.1 acre campus in El Paso, TX which will continue to be the hub of music classes and outreach efforts.
