“My bags are packed; I’m ready to go …
I’m leaving on jet plane” — John Denver
Our bags were packed. We were ready to go. My husband’s health took an unexpected turn, and our plans to fly to Albuquerque to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the LWML were put on hold.
But thanks to technology and those who worked hard behind the scenes, many of us were able to watch gavel-to-gavel coverage of convention via livestream, where the only thing missing are the hugs.
Soon, those participating on livestream grew into a community of sisters and brothers in Christ, caring and consoling one another as we shared the reasons we were unable to attend in person, offering prayer requests and on-the-spot prayers, asking questions (Is the convention manual online? —Yes!), and expressing our appreciation for the connection to each other and to the convention.
The year 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of Lutheran Women in Mission—LWML as well as the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. In this Fall 2017 issue, you will find features that commemorate both — looking back while we also look ahead with our eyes on the mission.
Another, more personal, anniversary comes to my mind when I hear ”Leaving on Jet Plane,” recorded by Peter, Paul, and Mary in 1967. I recall that summer 50 years ago when a pair of teenagers, my husband and I, first met at our two churches’ combined youth group. I was right out of confirmation class, and he was a college student. Because of our age differences, we didn’t become friends right away; but when I graduated from high school, the time was right. Richard asked me out.
Timing is everything because it is God’s timing.
I will always be grateful that my husband decided to skip his every-second-Tuesday-of-the-month meeting in the North Tower of the former World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, so he could attend an afternoon meeting elsewhere in NYC. I am thankful he was able to enjoy monthly visits with our two personality-plus, young granddaughters. And I give praise to God I was able to be by his side, singing his favorite hymns and reading devotions and prayers as he departed this life to the joys of his heavenly rest in Jesus’ arms.
And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8).
