Four LWML Districts Met in Convention June 17–22, 2016
LWML Iowa East District
Joan Berquist opened her first convention as LWML Iowa East District President at Oskaloosa, Iowa, under the theme, "The Ultimate GPS, God’s Salvation Plan," from Jeremiah 29:11. Over 215 attendees, with seven enthusiastic Young Woman Representatives (YWRs), heard past LWML President Jan Wendorf (2007-2011) share experiences from her trip to Tanzania in 2013. She highlighted the way LWML grants open doors to share Christ’s love while improving the lives of so many and stated, “I hope, after seeing how your mission dollars and prayers have changed the lives of these people, you will never look at your Mite Box the same again. It’s not just a box. It’s a connection to each person touched by our mission grants.”
LWML Nebraska North District
The women of the LWML Nebraska North District gathered around the theme, "Now is the Time," from John 9:4. President Crystal Miller welcomed 330 enthusiastic attendees, including seven YWRs and ten teens, in Norfolk, Nebraska. Keynote speaker, Elaine Bickel, blended humor while emphasizing the urgency of taking action, “Now is the time” and Jan Struck provided humorous interruptions to summarize key actions in the convention. Zone banners from their procession are being donated to congregations around the country who recently suffered some type of catastrophic loss or natural disaster. A Purple Silent Auction and a Rock-a-thon in rocking chairs brought in more than $7,000 to add to their first offering of almost $5,000 for the district mite goal.
LWML Washington–Alaska District
LWML Washington–Alaska District President Marie Chow presided over her first convention in Everett, Washington. The theme, "God’s Gifts for God’s Glory," from 1 Corinthians 12:4–6, focused over 240 attendees, including five YWRs and three Heart to Heart Sisters, during worship, prayer, Bible study, and activities (including a pledge dance for mites which brought in over $3,000.) Delegates selected 16 mission grants for the biennium. Mites in Action Speakers, Bible study leader and keynote speaker, Donna Pyle, and Comfort Dog, Shami, helped bring visible meaning to the dedicated service of the women of the LWML.
LWML Minnesota North District
LWML Minnesota North District President JoNette Brogaard completed her term in Willmar, Minnesota, with the theme, "Heir of God’s Abundant Love," based on 1 John 3:1a. Convention activities were enjoyed by over 300 attendees who heard Gary Thies, as keynote speaker, share his passion for supporting missionaries to the world through Mission Central in Mapleton, Iowa, and Bible study leader, Rev. Don Stauty, helped apply the theme verse to daily life. Attendees participated in a mite walk and servant activities. Delegates selected ten new mission grants and elected Marilyn Hiltel as their new President.
