District Convention Prayers
Please join in prayer for our Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) sisters in Christ who were scheduled to gather together in convention this weekend. The California-Nevada-Hawaii (CNH), Minnesota South, Indiana, Ohio, and the South Wisconsin Districts have canceled their conventions and are voting remotely. Texas, Wyoming, and Iowa West Districts will meet virtually this weekend.
We pray for the Holy Spirit to lead and guide these LWML sisters as they choose new officers and vote for their mission goal and mission grants. We are blessed to live in a time in which, through technology, we can efficiently continue our work. Grant all the elected and those who allowed their names to be placed on the ballots to be blessed by the many opportunities awaiting them in the LWML, and may each of the mission grant recipients’ needs be met according to Your perfect timing.
Let us say a prayer of thanksgiving for Debbie Curry (Texas), Barbara Kaun (South Wisconsin), and Jeanne Schimmelmann (Ohio) as they end their four years of service as district president. Let us also remember in prayer, Jane Morris (Iowa West), Martha Dubke (CNH), Deb Vinkemeier (Minnesota South), Marge Gruber (Indiana), and Barbara Schaer (Wyoming) as they continue as LWML District Presidents for another two years.
Lord hear our prayers.
Serving Joyfully,
President Debbie
LWML Missouri District Holds Mini-Convention
Members of the LWML Missouri District originally planned to gather in Springfield, Missouri, June 12-14, 2020, to celebrate the theme, “20/20 Faith Vision.” A virtual mini-convention was held Saturday, June 13, 2020. Rev. R. Lee Hagan, Missouri District President tied current events to the theme verse based on 2 Corinthians 5:7: for we walk by faith, not by sight. Attendees enjoyed Bible study and teaching by Deb Burma and DCE Mark Kempff. Rev. Michael Pottschmidt of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Concordia, Missouri, was elected the new junior pastoral counselor. A mission goal of $355,000 was adopted. President Sally Handrick reminded members “As we move onward into the next biennium with our 20/20 Faith Vision, we walk by faith not by sight.”
LWML Eastern District Holds Virtual Convention
On Friday, June 12, 2020, President Susan Bell opened the 38th Biennial LWML Eastern District Convention. Over 90 delegates and an untold number of guests participated in the convention on June 12th-14th, 2020, virtually on Facebook and the LWML Eastern District website. The theme for this convention was “We Walk by Faith, Not by Sight” based on the Bible verse, So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:6-7). Delegates voted to approve a 2020-2022 mission goal of $134,400, a mite goal of $61,000, and a mission grant goal of $30,500. By God’s grace, seven mission grants will be funded over the next two years. Rev. Jeffrey Nickel, of the Buffalo Zone, was elected junior pastoral counselor.
LWML Nominations Sought
The mission of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League is to assist each woman of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in affirming her relationship with the Triune God so that she is enabled to use her gifts in ministry to the people of the world.
As you read our mission statement, are you reminded of someone who has the gift of leadership? Someone who loves the Lord? Who loves LWML? Encourage her to submit her name to the nominating committee so she might use those gifts and serve as Vice President of Christian Life, Vice President of Gospel Outreach, Vice President of Communication, Recording Secretary, or as a member of the Nominating Committee. Encourage her, pray for her, and even take a look in the mirror as you look for a leader! Visit lwml.org/nominations or contact Brianne Stahlecker at nominations@lwml.org.
Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly Features
In the Summer issue of the Lutheran Woman's Quarterly, Belinda Bost, Children's Ministry Leader at Concordia Lutheran Church and School in Conover, North Carolina, shares a “Faith in the Family Prayer Walk” idea. It combines a craft project of painting rocks with intercessory prayers. Belinda shares, "A painted prayer rock, with a message of hope and love, for people to find, to pick up and hold, or maybe even to share with someone else, connects the head, heart, and soul, and blesses both the one who prays and the one who receives. If you want to share photos of faith rocks you have painted or found, post them on Instagram #faithinthefamilyrocks." If you would like a personal subscription of the Quarterly or eQuarterly, click here. Print subscription orders received by July 1, 2020, will begin with the Fall 2020 issue.
LWML-Themed Digital Backgrounds
Due to the coronavirus, many of us have been meeting online, many via Zoom. Although meeting in person is our preferable method of communication, LWML has created several backgrounds that will liven up your meetings. Instead of having everyone looking at your kitchen or den behind you, you can have a digital background of different scenes, and they are simple to use. The one pictured here is of a Kentucky horse farm, a reminder of our next national convention to be held in Lexington. Our mission grants are also featured. When in Zoom, look on the bottom left of the meeting screen, click the arrow to the right of the video camera icon, then click “Choose virtual background”. Just follow the directions and you have a new background. For downloadable LWML backgrounds and complete instructions, click here.
