Today truly is Twos-day! It’s the second month, the 22nd day, in the year of ’22. We put a lot of emphasis on dates and time spans, and we give thanks to God for the times we have had in the past as well as the time prepared for us in the future.
In 2022, the LWML is celebrating 80 years of serving the Lord with gladness. How will you and your group commemorate this special milestone? Some will joyfully collect 80 pairs of socks for a homeless shelter or make 80 quilts to send to those in need. Collecting offerings in increments of 80 or designating an 80-day period to give thanks to God for all His blessings are other options.
This year is a good time to look back in your LWML district archives and appreciate all that was accomplished for the kingdom of God by Lutheran Women in Mission. It is time to share the history, learn from the past, and have fun in the fellowship to come, however you choose to celebrate.

How old are you? That is a common question when we talk to children. The little ones are excited to tell us. As we age, many of us don’t want to think about our age, and we say time goes by too quickly. So, teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12). It sounds like we should celebrate each day and year God gives us.
At the LWML South Dakota District Convention in June we are having a big celebration for LWML’s 80th birthday and the 50th birthday of the Puppet Place — a mission project of our district that takes place at the South Dakota State Fair in Huron. LWML South Dakota supports Pastor Bob Utecht’s family who does Christian themed puppet/magic shows for families who enter the Puppet Place. For 50 years, thousands of people have heard the Gospel. The adults receive Bible studies to take home. At our 2022 convention, the servant project will be making crosses in the pocket to hand out to children.
Thus, we are to be thankful for and celebrate each day God gives and at the same time look forward to the time when there are no more days when Jesus comes a second time.

Last year, virtual ads were popping up selling the usual Christmas shirts. One particular shirt caught my eye. It said “A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices.” I’ve sung the “O Holy Night” hymn where that line comes from, but never saw the phrase all by itself, let alone on a shirt.
Wow, doesn’t that perfectly fit the ending of the year 2020? People are so weary of all the many things that have happened this year. Yet, we end 2020 celebrating our thrill of hope – Jesus’ birth and His saving grace.
Along with the struggles have come new ways to adapt. The heart of LWML is serving the Lord with gladness, and God has provided us with new creative ways to meet and to serve – ways that we may never have explored had this year’s events not happened.
If you would like to see more creative ideas on meeting and serving, please check the LWML website; www.lwml.org/covid.

In this time of pandemic, our older friends and relatives may be isolated in senior living residences such as nursing homes or senior apartments. In order to stay safe, no one can visit them, and often they can’t even visit their friends in the building.
To brighten their day, go to lwml.org, click the “Service” tab, and find “Mission Service Activities.” The February 2019 activity has ideas for “Support for our Elderly and Shut-ins.” It’s a way to fulfill this passage from 1 Thessalonians 5:11: Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
Perhaps your group can make cards, bookmarks, or cookies that can be mailed to the residents. They could enjoy Portals of Prayer or Mustard Seed Devotions. Consider sharing the Quarterly with them. If they have computers or smart phones, members of your group could do a Zoom or Facetime visit with a prayer or Bible study. Or how about brightening their day with a drive-by parade? Use your imagination and have fun spreading the love of Jesus!

Once a new district president did something different. She looked and saw several women in their 30s and 40s who loved God. She called each one and seven of the eight district committees had new chairmen (wisely keeping the structure chairman). I was blessed to be one of the seven. What did she see in us? God knew and gave her wisdom. She made us leaders of the annual retreats and fellowship times at convention, giving each a chance to be chairman, and molded us into a cohesive unit. She watched us grow, listened, and guided us without micromanaging. Three of the women eventually moved away. Three grew into district presidents. One now has a severe illness. The four who stayed in the district are life-long friends, rejoicing and aching and praying with and for each other. If you are a leader, is it time for a change? Follow God’s leading and do something different, whatever, wherever, and whenever He has need of you!

Have you ever taken the time to look at your hands? I recently spent a few minutes examining my hands and realized that they are not as attractive as they once were. Now they are worn and beaten, blemished by arthritic bumps, age spots, and one tricky finger that struggles to bend. But God takes these battered hands and turns them into hands of love. By his guidance and example, my hands become his earthly hands of service. My hands and your hands serve the Lord as we cuddle an infant, assist the homeless, hug a stranger, wipe away a tear, or offer prayers of supplication. Our hands become a unique and special way to glorify and honor our God.
As we serve the Lord with our hands, God holds our lives in His hands. The Bible study Celebrating Life as the Handiwork of God, featured in the 2019 summer edition of the Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly, highlights the message that our lives are created, guided, redeemed, and preserved by God’s loving hands.

Finish the sentence, “To me, God’s love is…”. This is the February 2019 icebreaker idea you will find in the program helps provided by the LWML Christian Life Committee. Along with the icebreaker, you can find 3 devotions, “Joy in God’s Love,” “Begin with God… So We Can Love Others,” and “Abounding in Love.” A sketch is available, “Overflowing Love,” Bible Study from the Quarterly, and Mission Servants Project of encouraging your pastor(s) by making valentine cards with heart-felt expressions of appreciation for the love of God that he shares. If you have other church workers; DCEs, teachers, secretary, etc… this can be done for them as well.
Go to the LWML.org website and find the “Program Helps” under The Word. You will find resources there for each month of the year. The planning is done for you. All that is left is for you to tweak it for your needs and use them.
What a blessing these resources are! We give God thanks for the ladies who put their time into providing them!
Now as you gather to share God’s love, no matter how big or small your group, thank God for the ladies who are present and ask Him to guide in your study and service.
To God be all honor and praise!
