Just about a month ago we celebrated the birth of Our Lord, Jesus. My husband's birthday is today (January 20).  He reminds everyone he was born on Inauguration Day because that way we won't forget his special day and will give him presents. Birthdays are a great reminder of the present God has given to us in His Son.

We all have birthdays and celebrate them in different ways, but there are some who have no one to celebrate or remember their birthdays. The Time is NOW to find the date of the birthday of a sister in Christ in your congregation.  Remember her special day with a card or birthday cupcake and if she is not a member of LWML, invite her to come with you to the next meeting or event. Share the joy you have serving through the LWML and its many opportunities!

Des Moines LWML Convention – The Time is NOW!

The excitement is building! Will you be a part of the 36th Biennial LWML Convention that will be held in Des Moines, Iowa, June 25-28, 2015? The Time is NOW. What an occasion we have to offer this opportunity within our congregations for women of all ages to join us! This gathering will give attendees the opportunity to be assembled under the theme, “Bountiful! Sow • Nourish • Reap,” as we focus on the words of St. Paul to the Corinthians: And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV). 

This is an event in which thousands from across the country will be gathered in worship, hear mission speakers, learn how our mites are used in the mission fields, participate in servant activities, and be a part of the group as a new mission goal is adopted, new grant recipients are determined, new officers are elected, and much more. Be a part of this “Bountiful Happening”! For many this will be a “once in a lifetime experience.” Many women, men, and children will be together focused on Christ’s love and blessings of Word and Sacraments and equipped by the Holy Spirit to work in our Father’s harvest field. The Time is NOW to share this exciting news with the women in your lives and encourage them to join you. Please don’t miss this magnificent gathering to celebrate and be filled with God’s bountiful goodness!

When I think of what LWML has given me, I think of many things. LWML has provided me with “family” members that I really needed at this point in my life. Let me tell you a little more!

I grew up as an only child, my father died when I was 11, and my mother passed away when I was 41. So I have been without parents for a number of years. When I joined LWML and began to participate in all of the activities it offers to serve our Lord, I met Alberta Barnes, our dear Past LWML President who recently received her crown of life. We became good friends, and I came to love her as a second mother. I don’t think I’m being presumptuous in saying that I think she thought of me as a daughter, too. I also became acquainted with a wonderful lady from Toledo, Ohio, Lillian Keller, who has become the sister I never had. Both she and Alberta were my LWML mentors. Then I met Kelly Miller, a young woman who was my president’s page at both LWML Ohio District Conventions. You guessed it – she has become the LWML daughter I never had! So through LWML, I gained a second mother, sister, and daughter!

These is just one of my countless stories about how LWML has enriched my life. The Time is NOW to get involved in LWML. Soon you will be telling your stories and sharing with others how LWML has blessed you. I will never stop using the gifts God has given me to further the mission and vision of this wonderful organization!

Got talent? Everyone does! As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace (1 Peter 4:10).

Perhaps you don’t recognize your own talents but can readily see special abilities in other women in your congregation. When the opportunity is right, let her know you see a special God-given gift in her and that you’d like to learn more from her. This one-on-one relationship helps to connect and strengthen your friendship with her and may also lead to ways in which her talent can be used in mission service to those in need.

The Time is NOW! to strengthen the bond of the women in your congregation and in your community by recognizing their talents and encouraging each woman to share those gifts with others.

A part of The Time is NOW pledge you agreed to on the LWML website says, “…I am committed to helping LWML make an impact on the next generation! I am dedicated to … caring for my sisters …”

As Lutherans we can’t help but ask, “What does this mean?” It’s as easy as … observing! Often a kind word or a gentle question or a smile can open the door to building trust with our sisters in Christ. Take notice whether your sisters are happy or sad. Intentionally rejoice with them in the good times and share in their sorrow during hard times. A hug and a prayer are often the first step on the road to Christian friendship. Care and then share!

I’m a writer. I write birthday and anniversary dates on my wall calendar, fill my monthly calendar with meetings, events, and appointments, and regularly update grocery, prayer, and To Do lists. I write so that I remember and to keep myself accountable.

This week I’m challenging myself to write something new. I’m going to add someone to my prayer list – the name of a woman in my congregation. Then I’m going to add something to my To Do list – personally invite her to help me with a local LWML mission project.

Do you value encouragement from others? Encouragement from fellow Christians can uplift and give support in the day-to-day activities of life. You can encourage others by sharing your faith in your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, as well as sharing your joy in serving Him through the LWML and its many opportunities.

Does a special woman in your life need encouragement? Perhaps you could share:

I am so happy that you are my Christian friend! I rejoice in the saving work my Savior has done through His perfect life, suffering, and death – all for me and you. I live in the hope of eternal life in heaven with my Savior. The LWML offers me a welcoming place to share my joy in Jesus through Bible study, fellowship, and service. Won’t you visit the LWML website (www.lwml.org) today to find out all the opportunities this group that can offer to you?

Identify those who need encouragement in your life. Make an opportunity to encourage them today. Take 1 Thessalonians 5:11 to heart: Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. The Time is NOW!
